Wondering if you can work and homeschool at the same time? Perhaps you need some extra money, or are not sure if you can quit your job to homeschool your children. There are many reasons why parents... moms... look for a way to earn money while staying home with the kids.
Like me, you are probably in constant motion 24/7 as a stay-at-home homeschooling mom... loving, nurturing, helping, guiding, playing, comforting, organizing, mediating, laughing, managing, healing, giving… and educating.
Family comes first and you love it! There is no other place that you would rather be than with your kids.
But, at the same time, you would also like/need to contribute financially to the family. Perhaps you are thinking of getting a part-time job.
Before you head out the door to look for employment, consider this...
It could actually COST you money to work outside your home!
I remember watching 20/20 some time ago and the segment featured a couple who were struggling financially. Both parents worked outside the home, yet couldn't pay their bills.
(With the rising economy, even when you live frugally, sometimes it's hard to make ends meet.)
Do you know what they discovered?
It actually cost this family MORE to have the wife work outside the home. She wasn't earning anything at the end of the day, she was paying to work!
If you are looking to work outside the home, some costs you need to factor in are:
Depending on what type of atmosphere you choose, most moms need to invest in some new clothes to go back to work. Working in an office environment, requires you to wear clothes that most often cost more than clothes to wear for cashiering, etc.
Although you may earn more, you will pay more to buy clothes.
With expensive and fluctuating fuel prices in the US, you definitely need to consider the expense of commuting to work. Don't forget to include wear and tear on your car.
Most moms when they come home from work are tired and do not feel like cooking and doing more work when they come home.
Unless you have someone at home cooking for you, like an older teen, your food bill may increase substantially.
Convenience foods, ready-made and quick fix meals although save time, cost more than cooking from scratch. Eating out may become a temptation because it's easier than cooking meals yourself.
You also have less time to look for the best place to grocery shop, or where you will receive the most savings.
Even if you only work when your spouse is home, there will undoubtedly be times that you need to have someone watch your children while you are working.
After analyzing their income and expenses, they discovered that in order to meet their financial obligations, it was more economical for the husband to work overtime. Surprisingly, he ended up only needing to work a few hours overtime each week.
The mom happily quit her job and looked into earning some money from home while raising her children.
She began cooking healthier meals, spent less on eating out and reduced her grocery bill. This family also eliminated the extra cost to fill up the gas tank multiple times during the week, reduced money needed for professional work clothes and saved on child care.
The mom started a small business from home which earned her some extra money to pay bills and take a family vacation.
