Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts
by Miriam Martin
We really enjoyed our homeschool field trip to the Whitaker Center For Science and the Arts at Harrisburg, PA. It's a science center where kids of all ages can explore science and learn more about the world around them.
There are three floors with lots of interactive hands-on displays. Learn about sound, how the body functions, burning calories, the forces of nature, kinetic energy, physics and lots more. You can step inside a hurricane booth and experience what various wind speeds feel like. Another interesting area is where you assemble and test K'Nex vehicles. Very educational and fun! So interesting you could spend the whole day there.
Our 17 month old grandaughter even had a blast in KidsPlace, a section for ages five and under. She especially enjoyed learning about and playing with the water. They also have an IMax theater.
To learn more you can check out their very informative website. Reservations can be made M-F from 9-4:30 at 717-724-3862. Prices vary from $4.50/p to $12.50/p depending on how many events you choose such as the Science Center, IMAX Theater or Discovery Lab. It's well worth the money.
If you're a SDPC participant there's an additional 10% discount. If you park in the Walnut St. Garage, which is adjacent to the Whitaker Center, make sure you take your parking ticket inside and get it validated at the main desk and you only have to pay $5 for the day instead of by the hour.
