UK Home Education Inquiry

My stepson has had problems coping at Senior School since he started two years ago, which has led to him becoming very disruptive in his classes.

He was sent to a group called Take Five which was a small group designed to help. He was really confident and happy whilst there but when the course ended and he was sent back to School he became withdrawn, angry, frustrated and generally unhappy.

We feel he would benefit from home schooling but how do we go about getting started, ie letting the school know, do we have to give a notice period and do we have to send a letter to the school. Thank you

Hi Claire,

You are free to home school your child in the UK. The laws are actually very favorable towards those wishing to educate their children at home.

Since your stepson attended public school previously, you need to write a letter to the school to notify them that you are taking him out of school and have decided to home school him. However, you do not need any special permission to school him at home.

I am not familiar with Take Five, but one of the requirements for UK home education is that you need to notify the local authority if you are removing your child from a special school (if they are attending under arrangements made by the local authority.) So, if Take Five falls into that category, contact the school to notify them, as well as write a letter.

Another UK home education requirement is any special educational needs your child has must be recognized. Perhaps they will want to know that you are addressing those needs in your home school.

On a side note:
You may want to check out the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). It looks like there are some registering and monitoring proposals in the works. You can have your say on the proposals up until October 19, 2009.

I'm not sure how you feel about the government "sticking their noses" in your business, but I would take the opportunity and share your thoughts.

Since I can not help you too much with UK laws (being here in the USA), may I suggest that the first thing you do is contact the Homeschool Legal Association there in the UK (Not sure of the exact name.) Do a google search for your area and get with the homeschool groups there. They know and can help you navigate the laws, finding materials and most importantly, give you support. A local homeschool group will be the most help to you.
