Easy Thanksgiving Homeschool Ideas
Need some thanksgiving homeschool ideas to do with your family? One of our favorite things to do as Thanksgiving comes around each year is read the Newberry award-winning book... Cranberry Thanksgiving!
Your young children will learn about kindness, acceptance, generosity AND learn how to make Grandma's secret cranberry bread!
Pick up the book at your local library and then head to the grocery store to get the ingredients for this delicious cranberry bread.
Cranberry Thanksgiving Bread Recipe
From the book, Cranberry Thanksgiving, Copyright 1971, by Wende and Harry Devlin
You will need...
• 2 cups flour, sifted
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/4 cup butter
• 1 egg, beaten
• 1 teaspoon orange rind, grated
• 3/4 cup orange juice
• 1 1/2 cups raisins, (optional)
• 2 cups fresh cranberries, coarsly chopped
Mix dry ingredients together. Cut in 1/4 cup butter until mixture is crumbly. Add egg, orange peel, and orange juice and mix until mixture is evenly moist. Fold in raisins and cranberries. Spoon into a greased 9 x 5 x 3 loaf pan. Bake at 350' for 1 hour and 10 mins or until toothpick in center comes out clean. Cool out of pan on a wire rack. Keep stored in aluminum foil.
Thankgiving Writing Activity...
Another thanksgiving homeschool idea is to spend time writing a letter or making a list of all the things you are thankful for.
Tell your guests to bring their letters too, and then take some time for everyone to read them either before or after your thanksgiving dinner.
When I worked at a ministry in New Hampshire twenty years ago, all the residents would bring their letter to the dining hall and they would be hung on the wall for all to read. Often these letters would bring us to tears as we read heart-felt thankfulness for answers to prayer, personal successes or how daily needs were met.
Easy Thanksgiving Homeschool Unit Study...
Your thanksgiving homeschool preparation can include study about the pilgrims and the first thanksgiving.
Some great books to borrow from the library are:
The First Thanksgiving (Picture Puffins) by Jean Craighead George
A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Boy: Samuel Eaton's Day: A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Boyby Kate Waters
Sarah Morton's Day: A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Girlby Kate Waters
If You Were at the First Thanksgivingby Scholastic
Your kids will enjoy preparing dishes that the pilgrims enjoyed at their first thanksgiving.
Your study doesn't have to a long drawn out unit study. Enjoy some time reading some fun books and cooking in the kitchen together.
