Homeschooling Math Review
We are getting ready to start our 9th year of home education. This will be our third year using Teaching Textbooks homeschooling math curriculum.
This was the one subject where my daughter and I clashed. Previously we had used ABeka and Bob Jones for math. At the end of sixth grade I asked her, "Is there anything about homeschool you would like to change?" Her answer, "Please don't teach me math." So, I started a serious search for a curriculum that would teach my daughter math.
I found Teaching Textbooks homeschooling math curriculum, and we did a trial run in seventh grade. She still doesn't love math, but we no longer fight over math. We used it for eighth grade, and the format was a little different but it still worked.
This past year, was pre-algebra. There were times she struggled, and I made her do-over some units, until she mastered the material.
It is totally done on a computer. I will comment on 8th grade and up format. It comes with a textbook. I have my daughter read through the lesson first, than insert the cd-rom into her computer and watch the lesson. It works through a lesson, the student has five practice problems, which I strongly feel the student should do. Then they have around 20 problems to do for the lesson. I would check her work, and if she missed any, I would make her work them again. If after two times she still didn't have the right answer, I would let her view the problem worked out on the cd-rom.
The wonderful thing about this curriculum is the teacher doesn't need a math major, and every single problem has the answer worked out step by step on a cd-rom.
This will be our homeschooling math curriculum through high school. It is one of the reasons we are going to continue to home educate through the high school years.
It is pricey, but you can source it used, and if you have more than one student, you can use it over and over and over again. No annoying updated versions to make it unusable! We never write in the textbooks that come with it, all the work is done on paper. In the end, the cost is worth it, because my daughter gets to stay at home, and we don't fight over a subject.
