Start Homeschooling Now, or Wait?
South African teen wants to know if she should start homeschooling now, or wait?
I am currently at a private school; although, my mom is thinking that I should maybe be home schooled for a while. We not sure on this idea as neither my mom or myself have that kind of patience, and I feel that I'll probably slack off most days. I really don't want to make a big mistake. I'm not exactly ''happy'' at my school, and most days I don't feel like going. I have such a strong desire to go to this particular school; though the fees are just so expensive. I'm thinking of applying there next year; and has a very high academia standard. I'm not exactly what you would call ''very academic''. In fact, I get terrible overall average marks. If I'm home-schooled in the mean time, will it affect me in the future if I want to apply at a school, or college/university? And would you think staying at school is a better decision, than being home-schooled for a while?Hi Alice,
Sorry for the delay in my response.
Making the decision to homeschool isn't an easy one for some; it was hard for me to decide to take the homeschooling plunge. Your mom has to decide that it's the best decision for you/your family and then be committed.
Some things to think about...
Unlike a brick and mortar school, homeschooling is more relaxed. You can school around you/your mom's schedule or preferences.
For example, if you are a morning person, you can get up early and start your work when you feel like it. You can also start later; it's up to you and your mom.
If you feel like you would slack off most days, then maybe homeschooling isn't a good idea. I personally think you could do it and would most likely enjoy homeschooling. If you are not very academic, you will have more time to devote to your studies, or focus on areas where you struggle. In a traditional classroom, teachers need to move the class along, leaving some students struggling or not completely understanding a concept before going onto the next. With homeschooling, you can spend as much time as you need, to master a concept.
You will also have more time to focus on your interests or hobbies. You also have the wonderful opportunity to choose curriculum that will best help you learn. If you are more of a hands-on learner, your mom can find curriculum that best suits your learning style.
As far as applying to colleges and universities in the future, you shouldn't have any problems. Many colleges look for homeschooled students because they tend to be self-motivated and know how to learn. Some have tailored their admissions process specifically for homeschoolers.
If your mom wants to homeschool you and nothing is stopping you, I say start homeschooling now and don't wait! :)
I hope this helps! Others may post their thoughts and advice for you too.
