Sonlight Homeschool Curriculum Review and Money-saving Tips

by Kelly

Sonlight's motto is "The way you wish you'd been taught, guaranteed!" They are so right. I love reading books, discussing books, thinking about books, and this love has been passed on to my children. To immerse yourself in a thought-provoking, sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat book does more to make history personal than a hundred hours of boring lectures, or pages and pages of workbooks or "busy work".

The Sonlight Instructor's Guide presents everything for you, if you wish to follow a ready-made schedule. Or you can pick and choose the things that work best with your family. It's like an Instructor's Smorgasbord. We tend to discuss books as we read through them, but if for some reason we manage to get through a chapter without stopping to talk, there are discussion questions provided in the IG. There are also historical notes and definitions, which are very helpful. We consult the dictionary when we are reading and find an unfamiliar word, and having definitions in the Reader's Guide saves time and effort. The Instructor's Guide works great "as is", but it is easy to adapt it to suit your needs.

The books are carefully chosen for each Sonlight Core, though if you wish you can add or delete books at will, or swap out Readers and Read-Alouds. When we began Sonlight Core Alt 7, our entire family enjoyed The Golden Goblet so much that I asked my son to let me have his reader - Mara, Daughter of the Nile - so the family could enjoy it as a read-aloud too!

Just the Core program gives an excellent education, but if you wish to add more to it, Sonlight offers Science and Language Arts, as well as a full array of Math programs and aids. And they don't forget foreign
language, other electives, and study aids. They offer great Science equipment; we love the microscope we bought from them. They don't miss a trick.

I do wish I had been taught this way. But I am grateful that I am able to learn along with my children. I love that my children are learning to THINK, and are not in the unenviable position of having to memorize facts to regurgitate on a test, and then promptly forget them. That is the way I was taught, and I am so thankful to have my children REALLY learning.

Besides the excellent education, Sonlight offers payment plans (9 month if you buy in April, 6 month if you buy April - June, 3 month any time). This makes it easier to budget. Also, if you buy a Core, you get a year's membership in the Sonlighter Club, which not only allows you access to the Forums (for two years, I believe), but grants you a 10% discount on most items (all but the ones that manufacturers do not allow discounts on) and free shipping. Anything you order in that year's time will have free shipping. And once you have bought a total of four Cores, you have a lifetime Sonlighter's Club membership!

They have great customer service, and are happy to help you decide what you need. Just call or email.

We have used various curriculums, and they have been good. But Sonlight trumps them all with its great literature and well-thought-out Instructor's Guides.

Thank you Sonlight!
