Saxon Math 5/4 Home School Currciulum Not For Us!

Saxon 5/4 Math Home School Review

Saxon 5/4 Math Home School Review

My nine year old daughter used Saxon Math 5/4 home school curriculum the first semester we homeschooled. We purchased it based on many good reviews I read on-line. Unfortunately I didn't know enough about her learning style when we started homeschooling to know this was not the curriculum for her!

Saxon teaches a new concept, has a few problems on the new concept and then launches into review problems that may cover any lesson already taught in the book. This incremental spiral approach works for some students but my daughter really needed to master a topic with a little bit of review (mastery approach) rather than just an introduction to a topic and then a lot of review. Before beginning Saxon she had been doing advanced math for her age and grade but with Saxon she grew so frustrated she really slowed down.

It was bought new but we could have saved $$ had I searched for it used.

Hi Karen! Thanks for sharing about Saxon Math home school curriculum and why you didn't like it. We have used Saxon for years but this year we switched my second oldest out of Saxon too. She also likes the mastery approach better and now actually enjoys doing math. Blessings, Heather :)

Saxon math
by: Anonymous

For us it was the same with Saxon 8/7: the short spiral is not the way my kids are learning - and not the way I want them to learn math. We prefer to stay on a topic until it is thoroughly mastered, and then move on to the next *realeted* topic- Saxon jumps between completely unrelated topics.
The other thing we all disliked was the fact that Saxon, while stressing the usefulness of math, is completely devoid of excitement and joy. I did not get the sensation that the authors themselves love math and find it tremendous fun to do math.

We have switched to The Art of Problem Solving and are completely happy with it. No short spiral, a very thorough treatment of each topic, and it is obvious that the authors love their subject - we feel it in every page.

The Tedious Daily Marking of Saxon Math Solved
by: Anonymous

We love Saxon Math and have used it for many years. Our kids have done well with it and were well prepared for college. We hate the daily marking and grading with Saxon Math but we think we have this solved now with Dr. Aardsma's Saxon Math Checker www.draardsmassaxonmathchecker.com. A great time saver for us and the kids. We don't like the soft cover texts in the youner grades and think the publishers should make them hard cover. Books have great resale value on ebay!
