Rod and Staff Homeschool Bible Review

The Rod and Staff homeschool Bible Nurture Series is a very thorough and biblically accurate retelling of the bible. I have used it for 3rd grade and currently for 1st and 4th.

The younger grades use the same text for phonics, grammar, reading comp and hands-on worksheets, which are all covered in corresponding workbooks. The older grades use the workbooks for reading comp, grammar and some writing.

I love that the more obscure Old Testament material is covered so well. The names and orders of the kings are covered repeatedly through third grade; memorization is also
encouraged.

The price on the workbooks is quite reasonable, the highest around $7. The textbooks and teacher's manuals are more expensive, $12 to $15, with up to three texts per grade.

To cut costs the texts and teacher's manuals can be purchased used; I've seen them at 25% of the original cost. Of course these books are a one-time purchase and can be sold when you are finished with them. Sometimes you can find the workbooks secondhand as well though not often as they are consumable.

To cut costs with the workbooks in the lower grades you could choose to buy only one of the skills sets, ie. only buy phonics or reading or the worksheets. Another plus to this series is that it can be used for bible story-telling, as well as school material.

I recommend this series to anyone searching for a solid homeschool bible program for their homeschool.
