Rod and Staff 3rd Grade Homeschool Reading

by Mari
(Arizona)

My daughter loved the Rod and Staff homeschool reading program, but was very overwhelmed by the amount of comprehension work that was required for each lesson.

She would sneak reading lessons and try to not do the comprehension lessons. We had to come to an agreement of doing less of the comprehension lessons - about half.

If you use Rod and Staff reading, I would recommend doing only half of the comprehension lesson. R&S was made for a classroom setting and provides way more work than a homeschool child needs to do.

Rod and Staff 3rd Grade Reading lessons

We divided each lesson over two days. He reads the story then does section A and B Mon. Tues. rereads story and finishes sections. Repeat Wed. (reads story and A and B) and Thurs. (rereads story and finishes sections) for next lesson. Off Fri. (or used for correction time if needed). I like this schedule giving him an extra chance to read the story, hoping it will help him retain more longer.
