Sonlight Homeschool Curriculum Review
Your family is unique. What works for you, may not work for others. Find out why Sonlight homeschool curriculum doesn't quite make the grade with this homeschooling family...I have used Sonlight Core 3 this year. My children are 8 & 10 and using one set for both of them is nice.
I really like that the books all tie together when you follow the IG (Instructor’s Guide). My children are excited when they hear the same things happening in each book, even though each book will have different plots.
I didn't like the Bible, I need something more than just reading out of the Bible for my children. Also, the science does not flow together.
The spelling is easy to follow, but I do not think this is helping my child who is a weak speller. She needs to learn the "rules" of spelling, and I don't feel she is learning them now.
Sonlight math was very basic, it went very slow for my 8 yr old. I moved her onto Aleks and she has finished the entire 3rd grade math in only 2 months and is now going onto 4th grade.
I do not know if I will use Sonlight next year. I believe I want something that has some testing to prepare my children more for the way things work in college.
Sonlight does not have any "testing". I do not want them to be scared to test later in life; tests are needed for driving, finding a job, and a weekly part of life in college. I wished they offered a testing option with their curriculum. Then I would feel better about using certain parts. I could make up my own test, however I feel I am paying for full program I shouldn't have to make up my own test.
One other note, you will need a lot of space to store the many books that go with this program. My children are still reading books in their "free" time, so the reading isn't overwhelming, split between two children. It is just A LOT of books.
Thanks for taking the time to review Sonlight and sharing some insight into how it's working with your family. I like that you include both the pros and cons of the curriculum; it helps others know some obstacles they may encounter.Would you like to leave a comment? Use the link below...
