Common Problems with Homeschooling

Everyone encounters some problems with homeschooling, at some time or another; although rewarding, teaching a child isn't always easy, and raising children is hard work.

As with every worthwhile endeavor, difficulties and hard times will come. Although you may feel like giving up, most problems are not insurmountable.

I've experienced a number of difficulties during our home education journey; problems like: Attention Deficit, math struggles, unsupportive family members, rural homeschooling (living in the boonies) different learning styles, teaching multiple children, teaching different grades at once, homeschooling with preschoolers and babies, resistant learners, homeschooling high school, transitioning from traditional school to homeschooling, transitioning from homeschooling to public school, etc.

There are many different situations and problems with homeschooling that you can experience.

Joining a local support group will help you immensely. You will not only find others who share a similar focus and common goal, you will meet parents who have experienced, or overcome their own homeschooling problems.

Common Problems with Homeschooling

Some common problems YOU may face as a home educator are: choosing the right curriculum for your child, behavior problems, not knowing how to begin, single parent homeschooling, homeschooling while working, learning difficulties, and dealing with friends and family members who do not support you in your homeschooling endeavor.

The problems you experience may not seem like a huge deal, but they are difficulties none the less. Anything that causes constant interruption, or your homeschooling days from running "smoothly", can cause stress.

Homeschool Friends and Groups

Joining a local support group will help you immensely. You will not only find others who share a similar focus and common goal, you will meet parents who have experienced, or overcome their own homeschooling problems.

Professional Assistance

If your child is constantly struggling with their school work, or a certain subject, you may want to get the help of a professional. You will find many professionals - online, and offline, who can guide you and provide answers to your questions. Your child may have a learning disability, or other problem that isn't specifically related to his schoolwork.

For example, a friend's son had some learning difficulties. After much time and frustration, she discovered that it was his eyesight. Once she remedied the situation, she noticed that his schoolwork improved.

Food allergies can also cause learning problems.

Seeking advice from someone who is experienced with different types of learning or behavior problems, will help you find the best solution before it develop into a bigger predicament.

Books, Websites, Blogs, and Forums

You will find a wide variety of books and online resources to help you in both raising your children, and homeschooling them.

Have A Homeschooling Problem?

My high school calculus teacher always said, "No question is ever too dumb to ask!" As a result I went from a failing math grade to A+, just by asking questions. :)

So... Do you have a homeschool difficulty, problem, or question? Ask away!

Maybe you are considering homeschooling and wondering if its legal, or are experiencing some homeschooling difficulties. Perhaps you are afraid your kids will miss out, or won't develop properly if you decide to homeschool. Share your questions, problems and/or fears... we'll try to help! :)

If you've overcome a difficulty or have a success story, we want to hear from you! Share it and encourage other struggling home educators... Thanks! :)
