Playful Learning: An Alternate Approach to Preschool
Playful Learning: An Alternate Approach to Preschool... a homeschool resource for homeschooling families and groups; read this mom's review to learn more...
When we decided to form a homeschool group, there was a decent sized group of interested parents, but we had no guide of how to do it. Enter, Playful Learning! This was just the type of resource that we all needed!
This is a great book with a lot of information and background for families getting started with homeschool. It is probably best for kids aged 7 and under, but some of the experiments and projects could be easily adapted for older kids as well.
What I found most helpful was that it helped my husband (who comes from a very pro-public school family) to better understand some of the reasons I was inclined towards homeschooling. It wasn't a book to convince him so much as information and resources to help him see how it would look for our family.
Our homeschool cooperative used this book as a guide last year and most of us continue to homeschool together this year with some new faces as well.
The book itself is reasonably priced on amazon, but it's also possible to find it used at other book stores. The projects and lessons are generally very, very affordable. Most are comprised of things around the house anyway or can be modified with what you already have around the house. Paper, paints, crayons/markers are probably the necessary things that people might not have on hand, but probably.
I also really like that the whole premise of the book is that you do it in a small community. Our homeschool cooperative has 19 families as of right now, but we meet in smaller groups for our lessons and then do things like field trips together. Our kids get the benefit of learning from a variety of people, but never in such a large group that the more timid ones get lost in the shuffle. Feels like the best of all worlds for us!Great review! Thanks for sharing this easy-to-use homeschooling resource with others, Monica; I appreciate it! Blessings, Heather :)
