Homeschooling Kindergarten Mom Loves Phonics Pathways

First time homeschool mom says Phonics Pathways works and is an affordable option for homeschooling kindergarten or beginning readers...

Last year was my first year homeschooling kindergarten. I researched and reviewed about a dozen different phonics programs before choosing to use Phonics Pathways.

I have to say that Phonics Pathways has been a very easy to use and very frugal option for those who are trying to homeschool on a tight budget (I paid $15 for my book after a Border's coupon and Borders Bucks).

The program is one book that you use for the whole entire time that you are teaching your child to read. The book has suggestions and reproducibles for games.

The program is so easy to use because you can set your own pace to teach. If your child needs more work in one area, slow down and review until he/she gets it. If your little student is a fast learner, you can skip some of the extra practice sections and shorten the reading lists.

I am very pleased with our progress this year and plan to use Phonics Pathways for my preschooler when he is ready to learn to read.

Great review of Phonics Pathways, Stacy! Thanks for sharing this affordable options with other parents who are homeschooling kindergarten, or who are teaching their young child to read. Blessings, Heather :)

Money-saving Phonics Pathways Tips

by Jen M.
(Tacoma, WA)

I am really enjoying teaching my son to read with "Phonics Pathways" by Dolores G. Hiskes. I was very intimidated at the prospect of teaching my child to read and this has made it SO simple. The program is easy to use and is really just open and go.

My son would be starting kindergarten in public school this year and we have been working our way through this book since he finished with his co-op preschool about 3 months ago. He can now read many of the BOB books and even sounds out longer words during our shared reading time.

The cost for the book is about $22. I bought the "Phonics Pathways Boosters" book but I wouldn't recommend it to others on a budget. The boosters are all cut out games printed on cardstock weight paper. Most of these games are included in the main text and can be copied (per the copyright) for use with your student. In the beginning the games were helpful to get my son interested but if I were purchasing again I would skip the "Boosters" book and just go with the main text.

Great money-saving tips and thanks for the Phonics Pathways review, Jen! Your thoughts are appreciated and helpful! Blessings, Heather :)

Phonics Pathways Home School Reading Program

by Mamela
(MI)

Phonics Pathways, by Dolores Hiskes, is a great home school reading program for teaching beginning readers.

The book takes a step-by-step approach, beginning with the short "a" sound, building two letter sounds (a consonant plus the letter "a") and then moving in a similar way through all short vowel sounds. The system breaks reading down into its smallest building blocks and makes putting the blocks together into words a piece of cake.

I used it with my firstborn when he was 4 and a half. We spent about 10 minutes a day, one page at a time, and he was reading words in no time and short sentences within a few weeks.

The thing that amazed me about this home school reading program is when my then 3 year old, who is strictly an auditory learner, came to the table one day while his older brother and I were doing the lesson, and proceeded to read everything on the page. While I thought he was playing and not paying attention at all, he was learning to read from across the room! From then on I included him in the lessons, and both boys are currently in 5th grade yet reading at a high school level.

The book is not flashy. It's black and white, and the pictures and platitudes are not particularly engaging. However, my kids are great readers, and able to sound out unfamiliar words based on the principles of phonics they have learned.

I have a friend who uses this curriculum almost exclusively when tutoring dyslexics, and has found the concept of treating the letters as pictures that stand for words helpful in teaching reading even to adults with learning difficulties.

At about $30, this method is worth a try if you have a beginning reader or a child who has struggled to grasp reading.

Thanks for the Phonics Pathways review, Mamela! I am not familiar with this book, but it sounds like a wonderful, easy-to-use and affordable home school reading program. I am sure your story will be very helpful to other parents of beginning readers. Blessings, Heather :)

"Phonics Pathways", by Dolores G. Hiskes

by Natalie
(Highland, Indiana)

I have been using "Phonics Pathways", by Dolores G. Hiskes for approximately eight months now, with our five year old son. I started working with him when he was 4½ (preschool age) and am continuing to work with him now with this book.

He went from being frustrated and having low self-confidence in whether or not he would be able to read, to now reading on a first grade level--really.

The book eases into reading. It starts off with long and short vowel sounds, and then progresses to pairing the vowel with a consonant, and builds from there. The book is arranged into groups of study (different suffixes, two consonant beginnings, etc.), so that the educator can focus on one unit of study at a time.

The book is economical (approximately $9 new on Amazon.com or about $5 used), and I can see that we will get more use out of it when our we start homeschool Kindergarten in the Fall.

Thanks for taking the time to help other parents learn about this homeschool reading resource. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated, Natalie! Blessings, Heather :)
