Need Homeschool Ideas for Teaching Multiple Students

Homeschool Ideas Needed

Do you teach multiple children? Please share your homeschool ideas for teaching multiple grades at once!

I've tried plenty of homeschool curriculum types and have found we actually operate better and learn more with textbook type curricula, and lots of living books related to what we're studying.

I'm not going to feel bad about my choices anymore, because it works for us! So far, it's okay, because only one child is really at proper school age, so the others listen in. I print a coloring page or activity for the little ones to do when we do history, science etc, but work using the text as a spine.

But when they're bigger, and you use traditional curricula, how do you do teach three children, three different books for each subject?

I know unit studies are on option, but we're tried that and I'm exhausted. I need a spine to work with. Should I continue just using the older child's texts, as I have been, and adding little grade appropriate activities for the younger ones, or how do other parents who use BJU or Abeka or CLP manage to juggle multiple children?

Ok, I am going to share what our family and what my sister-in-law do but keep in mind, you may need to try many things to find what works for you.

Each child works on their Arithmetic & Language arts for the grade or ability level they are at (We do well with Abeka) While some are working on their seat work & practice I teach the lessons to the youngest first, then when they are working on seat work, I go to the next and so forth. If someone gets done too soon, they work on spelling.

Now we do science together. I do have the Abeka science book but only use it as a guide. I am a real science buff (pre-med major in college) and just could not find a "sciencey" enough book for us. I gather materials from my own supply of books & the library. We do experiments together and the older kids had more advanced stuff to do. Example: butterflies; older kids drew, labeled states, described etc, younger just colored the states.

We do geography together. Right now, we are finishing up a state a week, but going to a country a week. Mon we do a quick overview, younger kids do a color sheet & older have to prepare a mini report and present to kids. Each day we use geography flashcards (Abeka..well worth the money) to learn states and capitals and we are about to go on to countries

And the same goes for history (we use Story of the World), art, music, Bible, etc. The older kids get the more advanced activities.

Does this work perfect every day? Unfortunately, no. Learn as you go, learn not to sweat it, relax & enjoy! You may have to try serveral things to find what works best. My buddy only teaches one or two subjects a day and that works for her kids. Hope this helps
