My Father's World Homeschool Curriculum Review

Charlotte Mason-type Homeschool Curriculum

Charlotte Mason-type Homeschool Curriculum

If you like an all encompassing, everything laid out, Charlotte Mason-type learning atmosphere, this easy-to-use, affordable curriculum may be what you are looking for…

This year we began using My Father's World, Countries and Cultures (3rd and 4th grade), as well as the kindergarten curriculum with our older three children (10, 8 and 5).

Initially I was attracted to the Charlotte Mason type lesson plans and the focus on cultures and people worldwide. I also like the missions focus of the entire series and the fact that it cycles through approximately every 4 years. The company sells expansion sets for junior high years.

The deluxe curriculum came fully boxed with letter manipulatives, science books, missionary biographies, art books, geography etc. I was very impressed with the level of customer care I received. After ordering, I received a phone call from the company asking about my order with a recommendation to combine some subjects and add another book. This saved me time and shipping fees!

With regards to actually USING the curriculum (which is what you really want to know), we have enjoyed some of it and tweaked other parts. After looking through the teacher's manual I realized there was no separate heading for history.

Sometimes the kids seem a little bored with what's required for the day. On the other hand, sometime things (like Latin?) are a little too difficult for us to accommodate at this stage.

All in all, I do like the curriculum. The fact that so many things have been gathered for me, the reading list is set out at the beginning of the term, the plans are week-at-a-glance as well as day-by-day, and encompass all the subjects I'd like to cover (except a separate history).

I think the price is fair as well. Without having to purchase too many extra items (excluding math, Latin, and English), our school year was pretty much purchased with one order!

Great review, Theresa, it gives parents good insight in My Father’s World and what they can expect. Thanks! :)

About My Father's World History

A comment about supplementing with History...

During the first year you aren't supposed to supplement with history. They want your kids to learn the geography first and then the next four years are history unit studies. They will get plenty of history in the following four years.

I did ECC (Exploring Countries and Cultures) last year and now I really appreciate the Geography we did last year. My son really has a good concept of the locations we are studying in the Ancient History this year.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the history while doing ECC. Just my opinion.

Ditto on the History comments
by: Anonymous

I just wanted to ditto the last comments. The focus is geography and the study of international cultures. It is sort of like getting a big picture before learning all the details. I also agree with the usefulness of knowing the location of so many countries. We really noticed it after the fall of Rome when the countries of Europe start to form.

We have loved the minimal prep and great hands-on activities in geography/history, science, and bible throughout the years that really help my kids to remember what we are learning. Each year holds its own memories and learning experiences.

Should Have Added..
by: Theresa

Upon rereading the post, I should have added that the missionary stories do have history written in. By that I mean that while we read Cameron Townsend, there were historical events that he lived through (World War 1, for example) that could be written on a Mason-style timeline. -Given that there are six biographies in the Exploring Countries and Cultures year, that's a decent amount of history covered.

Great Observation
by: Anonymous

That is a great observation! So even if you do not want it you get a little bit of history :). It's just not the focus for the first year and that's o.k. too :)
