Miquon Homeschool Math Review
We bought the six children's "lab books" and the three teacher's books because we received a TON of math manipulatives from a retired teacher and wanted to make use of them. Miquon offers many opportunities to use Cuisenaire rods, counters, etc. We've used it for one learner, first through third grade, and recently bought just the student books for our next learner, who will begin using them next year. The student workbooks are extremely affordable ($5.75-$7.50 each). The only teacher book we have really referred to on a regular basis is called "Lab Sheet Annotations." The other two may be superfluous. Each student book is for 1/2 of a grade level. Each book includes all four operations (+, -, x, division)--a nice intro for learners to all four from the start-- and each subsequent book builds upon the previous. One or two worksheet pages a day keep the student on the 1/2 year schedule, but our second grader did the two first grade books in about six weeks as a refresher. She has consistently tested above grade level in math after using Miquon materials. The learner can work mostly independently and the parent helps only if asked, although I check my learner's work daily. I highly recommend this homeschool math course for its affordability. The main expense would be for a set of Cuisenaire rods, which can be used in many other ways and by all your learners--well worth the investment. Great review Chanin!
