Homeschool Math Curriculum Review

Busy mom of eight chooses Math-U-See curriculum for her multi-aged classroom and hasn't regretted it... ever!

I have eight children and after looking around at different math curriculum I decided to go with Math-U-See! I have not regretted it!

From my 24 year old to my soon-to-be 5 year old, Math-U-See has been the way to go! It is a very easy to-do-on-your-own curriculum (with the help of a DVD and teacher's guide). My students did their own work and grading.

I would recommend it to any teacher out there! -Kay Knepp

Wow Kay, you are one busy homeschooling mama! Thanks for taking time away from your full schedule to share about Math-U-See curriculum - it's much appreciated. Blessings, Heather

Math-U-See Curriculum Blessings

Math-U-See is easy for me, and I'm THREE!

Math-U-See is easy for me, and I'm THREE!

After years of tears of frustration with my oldest child over math, a friend shared Math-u-See curriculum with me. Words cannot express how much this curriculum has blessed us!

My daughter would literally struggle through her math lessons for two or three hours each day, never finishing the work by the end of the school year. With Math-u-See, she finished her entire math book by Christmas, and asked for the next book as a gift!

This sounds too good to be true, but it's not.

The key is the system stays with one concept until there is mastery. For instance multiplication is the topic for an entire year, then division, then fractions. This system is marvelous!

There is a student workbook that is consumable, a teacher's edition, and a DVD that has a brief teaching session for each lesson. There are colored blocks to purchase for the younger grades which I would highly recommend. They often make reference to the colors of their blocks, and I like to make things as simple for my kids as possible.

The fraction year has a set of overlays you can obtain. The lessons are numbered 1-30 with six pages for each lesson. They are marked a-f. My daughter would often do 3-6 pages per day!

The teaching lessons are just a few minutes long, yet thorough. I have rarely had to reteach anything. Another bonus is the CD they offer with skip counting. Highly recommend it as well! Even a three year old can learn to skip count with these songs.

There are biblical versions of the songs on the cd, which we love, and there are regular songs you can choose.

The only possible drawback to this curriculum may be its lack of color. There are no distracting pictures and everything is in black and white. My daughter found this very helpful, but others may miss the clowns and balloons on the sides of the page. You could always invite them to decorate the margins in the early grades for fun!

Great review with helpful tips, Nicole. Cute, cute picture too! :)

Math-U-See K-12 Curriculum

Proven, Hands-on Homeschool Math Curriculum

Proven, Hands-on Homeschool Math Curriculum

Hands-on homeschool math program, perfect for visual learners; homeschooling mom shares why she uses Math-U-See curriculum for every grade...

Our family has used Math-U-See homeschool math curriculum for several years now. We have used it for Kindergarten through High School. The curriculum comes with a DVD where a math teacher teaches the concept (to me or my children). He goes over the topic, then the Teacher's Manual has the instructions of that topic along with examples for you to use with your children.

The student book is in two parts: the first three pages are to go over and reinforce what you have just learned. If you feel that the child gets it, don't make him continue doing all the pages (you can save those pages for a later review if it is needed). The second three pages are review of everything he has been learning. You do all of these pages. There is also a test book.

Steve Demme, the author, encourages you to let the children teach it back to you as a means of showing mastery of the topic.

You will also have manipulatives to help you see and build what the concept is, which is a great tool for visual learners. The manipulatives are not just for the earlier grades, there are also some available for fractions, decimals, and algebra.

We are very pleased with Math-U-See curriculum; they really get it!

Great review, Nadine; thanks for sharing, especially about the manipulatives for older grades. Many of us, I'm sure, equate manipulatives for younger grades only! Happy homeschooling, Heather:)

Math-U-See Curriculum Made the Difference!

Math-U-See Curriculum Review

Math-U-See Curriculum Review

Do you know where Decimal Street is? This experienced home educator does, and so do her six kids; her homeschool math curriculum showed the way, and can guide you too...

I have six children and have been homeschooling for eight years. I have tried everything from the classical approach to unit studies to pre-packaged sets. I have discovered along the way that each child is so different that I need a different approach for each child. But the one thing that has worked across the board for all the kids is Math U See!

It is a wonderful math curriculum that makes math make sense! Even from the earliest stages with Decimal Street! My oldest is now in pre-algebra as my 5th begins Alpha, and I love it. I especially love the DVDs, so don’t skip them! It may seem a bit unusual at first, but it works! I couldn't recommend it any higher.

Thanks for sharing about Math-U-See curriculum! You referenced Decimal Street; I thought some may not know where Decimal Street was, so I found an interesting video so others can learn their way... Enjoy! Heather :)
