K-12 Homeschool Math Curriculum

When it comes to teaching mathematics at home, choosing homeschool math curriculum that ensures students master the material before advancing to the next level, is a key to success...

My children and I started using Math-U-See homeschool math curriculum last year and we have loved it, especially for my youngest daughter who started this program in kindergarten. I love the way students are taught using manipulatives, and that Math-U-See makes sure the children have mastered each new skill.

Math-U-See dedicates one book to teaching mainly one skill. The Alpha deals with addition, the Beta deals with subtraction, Gamma with multiplication, Delta with division and so forth.

Each new lesson is taught on a CD and the student and parent watch it together. The student then goes on to do three pages of the new skill and three pages of review (only one side to each page). I highly recommend taking a look this homeschool math curriculum.

Thanks for the recommendation, Jennifer; it's much appreciated! Blessings, Heather

Math U See Homeschooling Math Review

Math U See Homeschooling Math Review

We switched to Math U See (MUS) many years ago after struggling to find a homeschooling math curriculum that fit our children's learning styles. Since we had had an eclectic mix of exposure before starting MUS, we chose to start over at the beginning. The first few books flew by with ease as there was a lot of review. We are now using Algebra 2 after having completed Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Geometry. My son doesn't want to change and is looking forward to completing the series through Pre-Calculus. (They are now offering an online Calculus course which I haven't investigated yet.)

One of the things that takes some getting used to with MUS is the division of topics throughout the early books. Alpha is strictly about addition, Beta is subtraction, etc. I noticed early on that my children did not score well on standardized math tests because they had yet to be exposed to, say, division. After the six elementary books have been completed, this issue seems to have resolved itself.

I really like that Mr. Demme, the author and video teacher, teaches algebra concepts from the first book. He uses the word algebra and talks to the students about how not to be afraid of it. By the time they reach Algebra 1, they have been "solving equations" for seven years!

The format of the homeschooling math program is a DVD and teacher manual, student workbook and test booklet, and manipulatives. The manipulatives are a key to understanding the underlying concepts.

The way we have used the program is watching the DVD lesson together, letting Mr. Demme have the role of teacher. We then practice the concept together, then the student works on the workbook pages and takes the lesson quiz when they are confident. Some of the lessons are simple enough that they simply show mastery by taking the lesson quiz and moving on. Each of the lessons adds only a small bit of new material, so the student is never overwhelmed.

Overall, I have been extremely happy with Math U See. I recommend it to anyone who asks about a math curriculum. On a personal note, I am a licensed engineer, so math is very important to me.

Wonderful, thorough review of Math U See homeschooling math program – thanks, Nancy! Blessings, Heather :)

Math U See Review and Tips

Eliminate Home School Math Failure!

Eliminate Home School Math Failure!

I love Math U See home school math curriculum! The way Mr. Demme approaches math is so unique and appeals to different learning styles.

Each of my oldest three children have been able to grasp the math concepts by combining the manipulatives, the DVD teaching and the activities in the teacher book. His simple DVD presentation made teaching math simple and un-intimidating for me.

I struggled through math in school and something that reminded me of the way I was taught math would have been too hard for me to teach.

I have used Math U See since my oldest was in 3rd grade. She is now a jr. in high school. I've found this curriculum to be one of the more affordable ones out there. You only have to buy the manipulatives once and you can use the same DVD and teacher's manual for each child.

To cut costs in a family with more then one child the work can be done on a separate piece of paper so you can reuse the student books. I'm so thankful I found this curriculum!

Before we found it my dd struggled with math but this curriculum has made achieving mathematical literacy achievable for all of my children!

Great review and tips, Judith! Thanks. :)

Math U See Homeschool Math Curriculum Transition Tips

Math-U-See Homeschool Math Curriculum

Homeschooling mom shares some frustrations of switching her children from Saxon to Math-U-See homeschool math curriculum...

I switched to Math-U-See homeschool math curriculum from Saxon 3 this past year with a child in 1st grade. I will be using it from the beginning with my Kindergartner this year. I love the easy breakdown of concepts. Math-U-See offers plenty of practice (too much for my 1st grader - I went to giving the lesson & then the test), although I don't expect the same for my Kindergarten child.

When switching from other curriculum, the set up of the Math-U-See may frustrate you. We hadn't covered X in this book which was what brought us to the book, but we had already covered W, Y & Z. My only dislike is the extreme lack of writing space for early/reluctant writers. (I have heard they are correcting this though).

Great tips, Mary! Thanks for sharing about Math-U-See homeschool math curriculum; your thoughts are greatly appreciated. Wishing you multiple homeschool blessings, Heather :)
