Easy Grammar Homeschool Success

Missouri homeschooling mom shares her Easy Grammar homeschool success to help others...

We have used Easy Grammar starting in about 3/4th grade. The kids and I both love the simplicity of the course. The students are first taught to pick out the prepositional phrase. As soon as that is found and crossed out, it is easy to find the subject and verb/verb phrase. It's almost like a game. The lessons are short, yet thorough. Instructions are written simply and examples are given. It is easy for even the youngest reader to work independently.

Thanks so much for your Easy Grammar homeschool success, Melissa! Your thoughts are appreciated and helpful. Blessings, Heather :)

Classical Homeschool Grammar Curriculum

by Diane
(Augusta, GA)

Great Classical Homeschool Grammar Resource!

Great Classical Homeschool Grammar Resource!

Looking for classical homeschool grammar curriculum?

If you are interested in the Classical teaching method, First Language Lessons by Jessie Wise, is a complete grammar program that uses classical techniques like copy work, narration, etc. to give young students a good foundation in Language Arts. Learn more about this affordable homeschooling program from one happy mom of an eight year old...

First Language Lessons is written by Jessie Wise, mother of the well known Susan Wise Bauer (A Well Trained Mind) and has proven to be very effective in helping my eight year old son master the concepts of English.

In the Level 3 curriculum, students are expected to memorize classical poems, diagram sentences, as well as do dictation and narration. I have used this book together with the Writing with Ease program and the Story of the World History Curriculum. The three books all complement each other very well.

First Language Lessons may be a little challenging for some students - but if they are a strong reader, they should have no problems with this curriculum.

Hi Diane!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with First Language Lessons; parents looking for a classical homeschool grammar curriculum will definitely find your comments helpful. Blessings, Heather :)

You can purchase this grammar curriculum directly from the author's website (peacehillpress.com) or from a variety of curriculum vendors and book stores.

The First Language Lessons program is quite affordable - it costs less than $50 for the teacher's guide and student workbook, or you can save money by purchasing a downloadable pdf version.

Homeschool Grammar: G.U.M. Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics

Homeschool Grammar Resource

Sweeten up your homeschool grammar lessons with the G.U.M. book – highly recommended by The Well-Trained Mind.

I bought the G.U.M. Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics book as recommended by The Well-Trained Mind. I have used this book with success with my daughter. It has simple homeschool grammar lessons that stress the usage of correct grammar.

While each lesson is short, The Well-trained Mind suggests starting a grammar rules notebook as a reference tool. The student would put in things like when to use "a" or "an", etc. We didn't do a rules notebook this year and I wish we had. When the review section comes up in the GUM book, my daughter forgot the rules and had to thumb back through the book to get to the right section.

To me, this GUM book seems appropriate for grades 3-4. I am actually going to re-buy this book and do it again this year. I liked the format of it, and think that we could just re-do it to fortify the information/lessons in it.

What a fun-looking book, Kathlene! Thanks for sharing this easy-to-use homeschool grammar resource with others. Blessings, Heather :)

Analytical Grammar Review

by Trina Sheppard
(Punta Gorda, FL)

I have just used the Analytical Grammar curriculum for one year; however, I am sold on it! It is a concentrated grammar study for three years (preferably used for 6th-8th grade). Then, in high school a review book is used for each year. The curriculum is divided into subject sections. On day one each week the parent will teach the new concept then a practice sheet is done each day with a test on the fifth day. So, after the parent teaches on day one the student is set for the rest of the week. The curriculum allows the student to use the subject notes throughout the week and even for the test.

It doesn't take a whole year to finish but a review book is helpful as a supplement if using the three year plan. If needed, the curriculum could be done in one year but that would only be done by doing grammar every day. Introducing one concept at a time then adding to what has been learned has helped my children. Also, there's a lot of diagramming which teaches the children how to dissect the sentence to look for the necessary sentence structure and provides a "picture" of the sentence.

This year I am also using the Junior Analytical Grammar which is for 4th or 5th grade. This is a basic introduction to grammar and punctuation. I highly recommend this curriculum.

Thanks for the informative Analytical Grammar review, Trina! I have never heard about this homeschool grammar course - it sounds interesting! I appreciate the time you took to help others. Blessings, Heather :)
