Homeschool for a Single Class?

Homeschooling Questions

Homeschooling Questions

My daughter is having issues with getting picked on in gym class, not by the students but by the teacher. My question is can I home school her for just that class, or is it an all-or-nothing approach?

If I can home school for gym, how do I go about getting started?

Homeschooling PE
by: Heather

Yes, you can homeschool your daughter for one class. Homeschooling isn’t an all or nothing approach. Most homeschooling families choose to teach/oversee all subjects (their children never attend a regular school), but students also take classes at a co-op, community college or private school, etc.

If a public/private school student is struggling in an area, a parent can school them before or after school each day.

As far as your daughter goes – I'm assuming she is a teen in high school...

If she is already enrolled in the gym class, you could pull her out of class for that hour; she should be able to work in the media center, or perhaps she can take another class.

If she needs the credit to graduate, you can complete the coursework at home and then submit it to the school so she can get credit. I would talk to the guidance counselor and ask the school for the syllabus or the course outline to see what is taught in the class. I would also print off a copy of your state's graduation requirements; it will tell you what a student is expected to learn.

Usually highschool PE covers health and physical education. (My state (Michigan) allows a student to get PE credit through extra-curricular activities.)

For our homeschool, my teens complete AOP's Health elective and for physical education, they can participate in extra-curricular sports, take a gym class at our co-op or exercise regularly during the week. This year my daughter is doing the P90X workouts for her PE credit, since she injured her knee last year while playing basketball.

I hope this helps!
Blessings,
Heather

homeschool for just one class
by: Anonymous

My 18 yr old daughter has suffered from depression and wan not able to stay in her high school her senior year. She tried to take the one class she needed at the community college, but also was not successful. She desperatley wants her high school diploma, so she can begin community college in the fall. Can I homeschool her for the English 12 class that she is missing. IF so, how long does it take for her to complete class at home to receive credit and get her high school diploma?
