Help! I'm a New Homeschooler!

by Renee
(Ottawa, Illinois)

I have decided to pull my son out of public school, he is in 6th grade. I just had him take an online placement math test, the test was 3 & 4th grade math; he failed the 4th grade portion horribly. My question is I want to pull him out ASAP. I have books and been online for 2 days straight... there is a LOT of information out there and its a little overwhelming. All I want is some curriculum to get him started. I have seen many things online, but I am a single mom and its just not affordable at this time. I believe text books and worksheets is the best to start out with, but where can i get this stuff? And I would like to test him periodically, but i dont know where to get all this. Someone please HELP!!!

Hi Renee,
Thanks for posting your question to my website. I apologize for not answering sooner; I got a little behind with our move. Hopefully you have found something that is working for you and your son.

If not, here are some possibilities for you:
The Head of the Class - theheadoftheclass.com is a free online curriculum your son might like. Currently they offer curriculum for grades prek through fifth grade.

Ambleside Online is another website that you should check out. You will find free curriculum resources and ideas, based on the Charlotte Mason method, for Kindergarten through grade 12. Read this online brochure to learn more about the Charlotte Mason homeschooling method and Ambleside.

You can try these programs out and if you find something different that you like better, you can switch. You will find some places to purchase second hand curriculum on this recent used Abeka homeschool curriculum post.

If you have any other questions, please let me know!
Blessings,
Heather :)

Single mom...
by: Leah

I just wanted to encourage your journey as a new homeschooler. I am a single mom as well. I pulled my son out of school at the end of October this year and was VERY nervous about it, but I have to say that God has provided thus far. There are tons of free printables that I have found just by googling different topics. There are tons of ideas on Teacherpayteachers.com for minimal cost. I have found some very cute ideas for our projects and there are many blogs that I have found that have free printables.
My son had just gotten so frustrated with math and the timed tests (he is only in 2nd grade) that he was pretty much done with math. I have been working on this since November but have recently found the Life of Fred math series. We are just getting into the books but he LOVES it! He is asking to read the story and then we work on a few problems. This might be something you could check out to help his math. The library has been a wonderful resource for us as well. Hope that everything works out for you guys and that you see the benefit of homeschooling as I have with my son!

inexpensive, good curriculum I found
by: Tracy V.

I have been using a pretty unknown curriculum with my two sons for the past two years that I just love called Christian Light. It is very inexpensive and each subject comes in a pack of 10 booklets, one for each month of the school year. Very portable and you can buy them all at once or as you go along. They are amazing curriculum and each day gives them bite-sized pieces of new material, and then there are about 3 pages of review of prior material to keep it fresh in their minds. We used it for arithmetic and language and I highly recommend them.

For Science, I found inexpensive Rod and Staff science and geography books very good, easy to follow and understand, and very comprehensive and full of Christian values and teaching. Highly recommend for inexpensive curriculum as well.

Help! I'm a New Homeschooler! NEW
by: Jennifer James

I want to say that we cant give our children same environment of learning and socializing in homes. A good standard school will groom your child and build his confidence. They learn to socialize and making friends. They cant do all this in home. So think about all the drawbacks and send your child to school. Would you like to identify best essay uk for me? I have to complete my thesis.
