Good Idea to Start Homeschooling?

Georgia mom wants to know if it's a good idea to start homeschooling her 16 year old daughter...

My 16 yr old daughter is at a new school and has been at this school for a few months and absolutely hates it. She is a straight a honors student with a 4.0 gpa. At her previous school she had to work hard for those grades, and felt she was being challenged. At this school, however, she never has homework, claims the teachers don't even teach and just give worksheets. This is believable, considering she has 100's in every class and doesn't do anything.

I feel this school is just a drop out factory and is really ruining her college chances. As she says, "this school sucks the education right out of you, and puts nothing back." So what she has suggested is homeschooling, so she can, instead of sitting at school and doing nothing at all, teach herself and not waste her last year and a half of high school messing around. Is this a good choice? She is aiming to get into an ivy league college, and get scholarships and such. Would pulling her out and putting her in homeschooling be a good choice?

Hi Krista,
Yes, homeschooling is definitely a great option for your daughter. She sounds like she would do well in a home school setting - she is motivated to learn and has initiative.

The first thing I would suggest you do is familiarize yourself with Georgia homeschooling laws. Homeschooling is legal in every state, but each state has its own requirements, etc. Read through this summary of Georgia homeschool laws compliments of HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association).

Download a copy of the Georgia Intent to Home School form; you will fill the document out and submit it to your district. The Georgia Department of Education also provides an attendance report;you will submit this to your district each month.

Many colleges want homeschoolers to enroll in their programs because homeschooled students tend to be self-motivated and independent learners - qualities that schools appreciate.

I would also encourage you to connect with other parents who can support you in your homeschooling endeavor. Your daughter may enjoy connecting with other like-minded students as well; there are a variety of groups to choose from.

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
Blessings,
Heather
