Funeral Home/Cemetery Homeschool Field Trip

by Julie

A local cemetery and funeral home was a wonderful homeschool field trip and resource for myself and my 8 year old daughter recently.

We met a female funeral director and spoke with her about her career and courses that she needed to become licensed. She gave us a tour of the funeral home, and answered my daughter's questions professionally, yet age appropriately.

The family who owned the mortuary owned a cemetery, also. We went there and learned about the history of the area, practiced our math from the dates on the markers, did rubbings of the markers, learned how different religions care for their dead, a little about cremation and grave markers. It was an enlightening experience. They were very pleasant. And, it was free!

Great Idea

I like ideas for trips that you can do locally, for this you could use any local company willing to help you. Nice idea, and something every child has to learn some time, why not early on to avoid fear setting in.

It's so easy to overlook simple ideas for field trips. It sounds like your daughter received their undivided attention and learned a few things along the way.

I love hands-on trips. What a great way to work in some math time and art, too.
