K 12 Homeschooling Review

K 12's online homeschooling program - a simple solution for parents who want the benefits of public education, yet want their kids at home.

We just started using K 12 homeschool curriculum this year and so far it is WONDERFUL! The science especially for my 1st and 3rd grader is outstanding. I am in shock at every lesson when I see what and how much my girls are learning. They are REAL scientists.

It's great to have your children begging to do more lessons! Best of all if you sign up under your counties public school, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is sent to your door for FREE!

Although not a complete online homeschooling program, K 12 is online based. Every day I log in and the entire lesson plans are online telling us everything we will do for the day and it should show us every day's plan for the entire year. The grade determines how much time is actually spent on line.

For example I have a 1st and 3rd grader and they still do 90% of their lessons out of the books they sent us. Online lesson times are more for fun lesson games, history lesson videos, science, and art.

K12 sends you all the teacher editions and student editions along with anything extra you will need for the course. Including paints, brushes, balance scale, materials for science, reading books, maps, globes, cds, dvds, etc. No copies need to be done from home unless they have updated a lesson.

Each lesson is gone over every day and checked off on the k12 site as well as logging attendance for each class for the day.

Grading and record-keeping is done for you through the program. I enter grades as they have assessments and keep their completed work in portfolio just as you would regular homeschooling. Grading through k12 is based on a mastering of the skill.

So far it really is a wonderful program. I was so happy when our county started it this year to give us an option against regular public school. I hope more families are able to benefit from it.

Jackie, this is a wonderful overview of K 12's free online homeschooling program - a public education option for parents who want more control over their children's schooling and are looking for an easy-to-implement online homeschooling solution. I like that it isn't totally online as I think young children would find it difficult to sit in front of the computer for great lengths of time. Thanks for sharing! Blessings, Heather :)

great but be careful

I am so happy and thankful this has worked for you. But Please do not think me rude but other homeschoolers need to be aware of somethings with this.

1) you are under the mercy of your local school board. Around here in SC, several friends who made the mistake (THEIR words not mine) of being lured by the free materials are having a lot of trouble with this. Instead of being in control, they found they were not. If the kids were not logged on during a certain part of the day or finished their lesson, the district office called. So if they heard of a great new exhibit at the local museum they could not take off. As my buddy, Heid, put it, they were slaves to the online programs. She was so fustrated by the end of the first month! but worse, so were the kids. And there are several others who were the same way. They would try to tell the district about things not working and were told, "listen , we have hired experts in the education field that say this will work. You are just not doing it right." Several weeks later, the district would revamp certain aspects of the program because the EXPERTS decided it would not work.

I have recommended this for families just leaving the public school system. If you have been homeschooling for at least a year or more, chances are you will not like what you see.

There is an old saying, "there is nothing free in this world" You will pay for it one way or another.

Again, it will depend on your school district.
