Explode the Code Homeschool Curriculum Review

by Amanda
(WA)

This is our first year homeschooling as my daughter is at the Kindergarten Level. The Explode the Code homeschool curriculum was recommended by another homeschooling mom. I purchased the series thinking that this was the answer for us, not completing a lot of research before buying.

We got off to a rocky start, and the pictures were somewhat difficult for my daughter to "get". She and I struggled at first, but I feel that it was more because of my inexperience and lack of confidence with teaching. Also due to a new evolution of our relationship from full time working mom to stay at home mom and teacher. Luckily, we persevered and we are doing MUCH better with this curriculum and she is benefiting greatly now that she has learned the pictures and we have both settled into our new roles.

Bottom line: I will definitely use this again for my other children, and will likely start sooner with the preschool getting ready to explore the code series.

Great tips, Amanda! Thanks for sharing about "Explode the Code" and your first year homeschooling experience - so helpful! Blessings, Heather :)

Explode the Code Homeschool Review

by Nancy Fisher
(Aurora, IL)

Illinois homeschooling mom recommends Explode the Code for struggling homeschool readers. Read her review...

I have used this phonics based program for my two boys (ages 10 and 7). They are both struggling a bit with reading and spelling. But they do not mind these workbooks because they think they are easy and they do well with them. I like them because they aren't traditional. For example, you really have to know what the sentence is saying in order to answer the comprehension question. They aren't just simple yes/no questions and multiple choice answers. They also stress segmenting of syllables/sounds of a word. And the workbooks are not very expensive (around $10)and there is no teacher key needed. Overall nice product!

Thanks for the Explode the Code homeschool review, Nancy; your thoughts are informative and helpful. I appreciate the time you took to share your "Explode the Code" experience with other parents. Blessings, Heather

Explode the Code Workbooks (all levels)

by Michelle
(Alvin, TX)

My children, now aged 13, 10, and 9, have worked through countless Explode the Code workbooks over the last 7 years. These books have have become my go-to workbooks to reinforce phonics skills, some language rules, and spelling. I do not use it as a stand-alone English program, but it's a GREAT supplement. My kids never complain at having to work through the books; yet I believe the workbooks have provided concrete language and writing skills.

The portion in which the student has to read two sentences and decide which picture it matches is very effective, in my opinion. The sentences require careful reading and thinking. I like that there is no fluff, and no tedious drill. I would heartily recommend these workbooks as a supplement, or even in some cases, to replace a more tedious language program. As students get older, the workbooks are more challenging. So, I do believe my students can use these books well into high school.

Excellent review of Explode the Code workbooks, Wendy! Thanks so much for taking the time to help other parents learn more about this language arts supplement; your thoughts are very helpful. Blessings, Heather :)

Homeschooling Kindergarten? Explode the Code!

Phonics Supplement for Homeschooling Kindergarten - 4th

Phonics Supplement for Homeschooling Kindergarten - 4th

When homeschooling kindergarten, finding fun, engaging materials can help make learning to read and write a breeze. Explode the Code is one such resource you may want to try…

I began using the Explode the Code books for homeschooling kindergarten last year. The books are a great supplement to phonetic teaching.

My daughter enjoyed the workbook pages in the student books. Although the teacher's manual is not necessary it did provide many great quick, easy and engaging activities. I especially like how they break the lessons into categories of learning styles.

Amy, this is such a great resource; thanks for sharing! Although I have never used Explode the Code, I have many homeschooling friends who have, and all love it! Blessings, Heather :)

Reinforces before moving on
by: Marty

I really like how the book stays on a certain level for a while.
It's not too fast; it gives plenty of reinforcement for the same letter sounds before going to the next set of letter sounds of similar difficulty.
