Dropping Out and Homeschooling: Is it Legal?
Concerned dad questions whether dropping out and homeschooling in Illinois is legal...
Hello I live in Illinois and I am father of a 16 year old teenager. My question is: how old does someone have to be to drop out of highschool and get homeschooled online or by a tutor? My son has been having some problems in school and he is very depressed. I can't force him to go to school in his current state. Please help. Thank you.Dear Joseph,
Thanks for taking the time to post your question to my website. Other parents will find your question helpful as I'm sure there are many who are going through similar circumstances.
Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states; homeschooling requirements and laws vary from state to state, though. Your son does not have to drop out of school. You can legally remove him by notifying the school. I would write a letter to the school letting them know of your decision to homeschool your son. Keep a copy of your letter for your records. (Check out a similar question from another Illinois parent as well as a link to the requirements for homeschooling in Illinois.)
Many parents use a tutor for different subjects - you would be the main overseer of your son's education. You can choose whatever curriculum works best; online curriculum is a great option, especially if you need to work, need more flexibility, or don't have the time to personally teach your son.
There are some great programs to choose from. If you need anymore guidance, please let me know. Other website visitors may offer some help as well.
