Daily Grams Review
End grammar grumbles and struggles - check out why this mom recommends Daily Gram...
Our current 4th and 7th graders do a Daily Gram each morning. We discovered them last year, so this is our 2nd school year using them. They haven't balked at the assignment because it is short and there is a variety of problems on each page. I like how things continue to stay in front of them because they continue to show up on Daily Gram assignments; i.e. combining two sentences into one, proofing a sentence for correct capitalization, adding missing punctuation, identifying types of statements.
My children can do these assignments independently of me, freeing me up for my younger students. You can buy the teacher guide (with answers in the back) and a consumable student workbook or just buy the teacher guide and have student write answers in separate notebook. Although, if cost is not an issue, the student workbook makes it very easy. Thanks Vanessa, for sharing your experience with Daily Grams. I appreciate the time you took to help other homeschooling parents. Blessings, Heather :)
For those of you who are not familiar with Daily Grams, or who have children who struggle with grammar...
Daily Grams are created by Dr. Wanda C. Phillips; Grams is an acronym for Guided Review Aiding Mastery Skills. Each book in the series contains 180 lessons for review of grammar concepts. The lessons are only about 5-10 minutes long or so, and cover different topics like capitalization, punctuation, general grammar review, and sentence combining.
Dr Phillip's Easy Grammar System uses a method called the "Prepositional Phrase Approach". Students first learn what prepositions are and then eliminate prepositional phrases from the sentence. What is left are the most important parts of speech - noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc. Her method helps students learn grammar easily and painlessly.
Although I have never used Easy Grammar or Daily Grams with my children, we offered a grammar class at our homeschool co-op and the text we used was Easy Grammar Plus. The students who took the class seemed to enjoyed, although I'm sure for some, grammar was not their favorite subject!
If you use Daily Grams in your home school, please share your thoughts and experience to help parents learn more about this grammar program.
