History of Calvert Home School Curriculum

The Calvert Story is quite interesting. Soon after the Day School's opening in the late 1800’s, a young head master named, Virgil Hillyer brought his passion, expertise, and excitement for learning to Calvert. Mr Hillyer’s aim was "to instill a love of learning to last a lifetime."

Calvert's fundamentals, developed by Hillyer, are still used today and include:

  • Presentation
  • Imitation
  • Drill through games and devices invented by Mr Hillyer
  • and Final Project

Hillyer wanted to help all parents – even those who could not afford to send their children to his private Day School. He began selling the Calvert program via a popular magazine, birthing the Calvert Home Instruction department.

Today, Calvert is used by over 500 thousand children, in almost 100 countries all over the world.

What Grades Does Calvert Offer?

What Do Parents Think?

Laurie, from Lancaster, PA, has this to say about Calvert home school curriculum:

I have used Calvert home school curriculum for one year. My daughter is using the 1st grade edition. I am so happy to have all the guesswork taken out of what she should be learning and just focus on teaching her and having the day to explore.

My daughter has learned so much and the extra content on the internet is very helpful. She especially likes the videos that go along with some lessons. I am amazed at how much she is learning and how easy it is to navigate for me.
