Beyond Five in a Row Homeschool Review

Learn more about Beyond Five in a Row homeschooling unit study curriculum from this FIAR veteran...

I have used volume 1 & 2 of Beyond Five in a Row. This homeschooling unit study includes everything but math and grammar. Moving from Five in a Row (FIAR) to Beyond FIAR (BY FIAR) was easier than I first thought it would be.

I still set up my planning pages the same way with the paper turned LANDSCAPE, I drew lines making 5 spaces. Instead of the name of the course as I did for FIAR, I put Monday, Tuesday... Friday. I did this because Beyond FIAR will not experience all the courses in any specific order. The lessons are based on CHAPTER BOOKS instead of PICTURE BOOKS as in FIAR.

I still did a lot of the teaching in a conversation-type manner. We simply talked about much of the topics having my daughter repeat what I have taught.

I did have my daughter do nearly daily essays. I had her write more of the vocabulary words than I did for FIAR.

It was not very long before my daughter decided that she wanted to teach herself. She kept quite an ongoing notebook so that I could see what she 'assigned' herself.

Since she decided to take over her own education as she did, I decided to move her up to 7th grade a bit early.

This curriculum can be very cost effective. Many of the books can be gotten from the library or cheaply used.

Thanks for taking the time to help other parents learn more about Beyond Five in a Row, Tamie! Your thoughts are helpful and appreciated. Blessings, Heather :)
