Let's face it... life happens!
Sometimes we are served up circumstances that are anything but ideal.
To continue homeschooling amidst family crises, death, sickness, newborns, sick kids or a job change, taking a more "hands free" approach is needed.
Five years ago, my mom died of cancer. She spent the last ten months of her life an hour away from me, in a hospital palliative care unit. With a newborn baby and two middle school aged children, I spent the entire school year, traveling three or more days a week visiting her in the hospital.
Instead of allowing our children's lives and home education to get completely thrown into upheaval, I adapted and changed how we "did school."
I needed curriculum that we could work with and adapt to our family's situation, and my older children could do independently.
Up until then, we used various homeschool unit studies in our home school. I loved focusing on one theme and having all subjects support the main topic, for the week or two of study.
But homeschooling became quite difficult with the baby and traveling to see my mom. I knew that her days were limited and wanted to be able to spend as much time as I could with her.
I began looking for a curriculum that was more student led – that my older children could do without me. I had little time to waste, and wanted to use our limited time focusing on the most important things.

Each Alpha Omega course is split up into ten smaller workbooks. The curriculum is written to the student, so your child can work on it independently. My children rarely come to me for additional help. They have fun completing the variety of hands-on activities, projects and assignments.
We do our devotions together in the morning and then my children work through their assignments independently.
Both my husband and I monitor what they do and together we mark their work in the evening. When there is no time for me to mark, my children can conveniently mark each others work.
I love it. It worked for us while our life was hectic and we still use Alpha Omega home school curriculum today!
