Affordable Home Schooling Materials

Cancer-surviving home educator recommends an affordable home schooling resource and shares God’s faithfulness to her during difficult times...

I am still kind of new to home schooling so I have tons to learn yet. My son is 12 and going into 6th grade this year but his Dad and I decided at the end of last school year, that schooling him at home was the best thing for him, as well as for me.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2006 when I was 33 years old. He was only 8 years old then and my daughter was 15. They both reacted totally opposite of what I had expected. My daughter shut me out and my son wanted to be with me every minute. He is such a blessing to me, always making sure that I have what I need.

My main objective is to be with him and I am disgusted with the public school system for shutting God out. We had Bible study with local college students when I was in school but now a teacher can be fired for uttering His name; it sickens me.

We knew it would be a financial struggle but the Lord always opens doors. I was left disabled and on Social Security, which never lasts, but I am thankful for it. My husband hasn't lost his job but we did have to move in with my Mom when I got sick. The medicine was so expensive, that a few times it was medications or food. I have always tried to be frugal and I love my coupons!!!

When I began searching for curriculum, I got a little nervous because some of it can get expensive. I went to Amazon, my favorite website, and amazingly I found two of the Spectrum books there and within 15 minutes, I found every subject. What really let me know that He provided once again, is that I had $50 in my Amazon account from doing surveys, and my book total came to $49.12!!! I still get chills thinking of it.

I really am pleased with the Spectrum series and they are not so easy that he gets bored but there is enough of a challenge to interest him. I have also found some great websites, this being one of them. I really do look forward to learning even more.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting your review of Spectrum's affordable home schooling materials AND for sharing your story! You are a remarkable woman, Lisa. May God richly bless you and your family as you learn together this year. Blessings, Heather :)
