Abeka is a Good Curriculum

Academic ABeka Homeschooling
Academic curriculum, traditional teaching approach, flexible options; ABeka provides plenty of additional practice to reinforce educational concepts for homeschooling families.
We have used Abeka for K5-7th grade and we have been pleased with it, however...
It is an academic curriculum that I feel is best for the classroom environment. There is a lot of "busy" work, which provides plenty of practice. It is a little costly, so I would recommend buying used if possible or sharing with another family.
It takes my older kids 4-5 hours just to complete the basics. It seems to be a bit like "doing school at home" as opposed to "homeschooling".
The phonics curriculum is awesome. I would rather use something a little less time consuming for the older kids, so they have time for more independent study.
The textbook curriculum does require a lot from the teacher.
The DVD curriculum (we only used that for one year) takes a full day. It is like sitting in a class room for the whole day. The kids also felt silly talking to the TV with the other students on the DVD.
Thanks for your insight, Marjorie. It's funny to picture your kids talking to the TV! :)
