ABeka Homeschool Curriclum Review

ABeka Homeschool Curriclum Review

If you are looking for a bible-based, accredited program for your family, ABeka homeschool curriculum may be a perfect fit for you!

I had homeschooled for two school years, 6th and 7th grade, and was looking for a more "Old Fashioned" way of teaching; where you read the material and then are tested on THAT material, not material from six lessons before. I found several different curriculum.

When I found and researched ABeka homeschool curriculum, we began using the ABeka DVD program in the 8th grade. We loved it! We began with the 8th because I was also looking for a curriculum that was accredited for the grades 9th-12th and ABeka offered this. ABeka offers several different programs: the "traditional" home program where you are the teacher and keep all records (there is no DVD), and the program we went with.

We went with the DVD program where I have some control but ABeka keeps all records and grades the final exams (you may grade if you care to, however they recheck all finals). This program is as if our daughter was attending the academy itself.

ABeka is a Christian based program. Bible is part of the ABeka homeschool curriculum and has to be passed along with all other subjects. If you are looking for a very structured curriculum then check out their web site. abekaacademy.org. Go to a "Material Display" near you. There you can see the books, and other things they offer. And someone is there to answer your questions! May you be as blessed as we have been.

If you would like more answers feel free to ask!

Thanks for your curriculum review, Annette! Blessings, Heather

Abeka Homeschool Review: Life Management Under God Bible Course

by Janell
(Tracy, CA)

I found ABeka's Life Management Under God Bible course to be very helpful in teaching my child about ways to follow God's Word. Once a lesson I taught was later discussed at his Bible study small group. He felt confident about speaking about the subject.

I was happy to be able to have the right tools to equip him with the knowledge of how to handle everyday situations that we sometimes can overlook. I highly recommend this ABeka course for junior year in high school.

Thanks for sharing, Janell; your thoughts are greatly appreciated! Blessings, Heather :)

Abeka Homeschool Economics Modification

by Beverly Martindale

Having Curriculum Struggles?

Having Curriculum Struggles?

What do you do when your curriculum doesn't live up to your expectations? Learn how this clever mom customized her Abeka homeschool economics course to meet her teen's needs...

Currently I am using Abeka Economics Curriculum for my highschooler. I noticed that while the questions at the end of the chapter (in the book) give a good review, they do not adequately prepare for the test.

I rewrote the questions for my teen so that he could answer them as he read, and made sure that every little detail that is included on the test is included in the questions. Some obscure facts are included. I also took the essay questions off of the test and gave them as homework assignments. I felt that this gave my student more time to consider the question, and would allow for a better comprehension of the material.

I do feel that the text itself covers the subject thoroughly, and would recommend it.

Thanks for the ABeka Economics review and the tips, Beverly! All is not lost when we experience curriculum problems. No curriculum is totally perfect but we can certainly modify it a bit to meet our needs.

ABeka Highschool Homeschooling Review

I LOVED this ABeka highschool homeschooling course. The class was my favorite out of all my highschool classes. Pastor Schettler was an incredible teacher and the class really challenges you to grow deeper and know what you believe. It took my personal Bible studies and my walk with the Lord to a whole new level!

Nicole, thanks for sharing your experience with ABeka highschool curriculum. It's much appreciated. Blessings, Heather :)

ABEKA Homeschool Curriculum Review: Grades 1-10

by Mom of Four
(US)

I have used ABEKA homeschool curriculum grades 1-10 so far. I have 4 children, all 2 grades apart so I am able to get great use out of my curriculum. I only need to buy workbooks every other year.

I love the Language, Spelling, and History. For Math for my 10th grader, I felt I need to add McGraw Hill with it.

I have been using ABEKA for 8 years. I love the biblical text and the easy to understand lessons. I also love the math because of the continuing review of past lessons.

ABEKA homeschool curriculum is affordable for my large family because I can pass it onto the next child. I high recommend this curriculum.

Thanks for taking the time to share why you use ABeka homeschool curriculum. Your review will be very helpful to those who are considering ABeka for their family. Blessings, Heather :)

ABeka Homeschool Curriculum Review: All Subjects & Grades

by Debra Fitzgerald
(Fredericksburg, VA, U.S.A.)

Twenty-year homeschooling veteran shares the pros and cons of ABEKA homeschool curriculum and why she chooses it year after year, after year, after year...

I have been using ABeka curriculum for twenty years beginning with K3-8th grade. This curriculum is Bible-based in every subject and concepts are integrated within several subjects. For example, if you are learning a particular phonetic rule, it will be integrated within the spelling, reading and sometimes language curriculum.

You can be flexible and use a variety of other curriculums to either supplement or in place of this one. ABeka homeschool curriculum goes from Nursery, age 2, through 12th grade and can be taught with the traditional method or using their DVD program.

You can choose between accreditation or non-accreditation. Although the curriculum can be pricey, you can find good deals on used or new materials through online homeschool sale websites or other sale websites. I have found most of my used curriculum from a local homeschool convention. Some materials may be brand new but sold for a low price.

One of the cons to ABeka curriculum is the updating. I'm sure most curriculums update, but that can present a problem if you have more than one child who are in different grades and probably will be using the older versions in the future. Unless you don't mind purchasing new teacher keys and books, then I would suggest purchasing the older version consumable books as they get discontinued. ABeka will let you know each year what is updated and give you a list of older version items which can be purchased until all materials are exhausted.

Overall, ABeka homeschool curriculum is well-written and challenging for the student who needs a little challenge. If a child struggles with learning, this curriculum can be a little tough to handle. It is possible for the struggling learner to do ABeka, but it would require more time of the parent to dwell on foundational concepts and extra practice of concepts.

Excellent review of ABeka homeschool curriculum, Debra! Thanks for sharing your experience and advice with other parents; its much appreciated. Blessings, Heather
