ABeka Books Homeschool Curriculum Review

Abeka Books Homeschool Review: Veteran home educator shares what she likes and doesn't like about Abeka homeschool curriculum.

We have used Abeka Books to homeschool three of our four children for every grade level. I really appreciate the organization of the curriculum, the Christian world view taught in each subject and the high standard of the lessons taught.

When we briefly put our children in public school, all of my children scored above grade level and my oldest daughter scored two grade levels higher. The only thing I haven't really liked is the high school English and grammar; I skipped a lot of the material and made my own lessons. Science, math, geography and history are excellent!

My youngest son is currently working through 9th grade literature and really enjoying the stories and life lessons they teach. I have passed on my books to other families in our church who also really like the ABeka material. Thumbs up from me!

Thanks for helping others learn more about Abeka homeschool curriculum, Kim! Your homeschool review is very helpful. Blessings, Heather

Eclectic Homeschooling Style with Abeka Books

by Wendy
(Detroit, MI USA)

Detroit home educator shares an Abeka Books review, as well as helpful Abeka cost-cutting tips...

Why do you like this homeschool curriculum?
We enjoy using Abeka books because of its advanced placement learning style and the fact that it is a Christian based curriculum.

In addition to Abeka Books we use worksheets from various websites such as: shepherdsoftware.com (tons of free educational materials and several downloadable programs), IXL.com, worksheetlibrary.com, http://i-cias.com/babel/arabic/02.htm (we are learning the Arabic language this year) and many others.

How long have you used it?
We have used Abeka Books curriculum for 10 years now because they start with fun projects from age 2 through high school.

What grades did you use it for?
Age 2 - now 6th grade with intentions to use it throughout High School.

What do you like most about it?
The classes are laid out for you, the teacher's manual gives great examples and Abeka is Christian based.

Is it affordable? Yes and no

Why? It depends on the family budget.

Do you have any cost-cutting tips, etc. to share when using this curriculum?
When using this curriculum I determine what needs to be learned on various grade levels and use Internet resources. I've also found that if you go on EBAY during the spring and summer months you can often purchase the books sometimes brand new for pennies. There is an Abeka support group online where the members give away materials or sell them for really cheap and affordable prices. I was able to purchase all of her books up to 12th grade for about $450 total for all on EBAY.

Great review, Wendy! Thanks for including some helpful Abeka money-saving tips too! Blessings, Heather :)

Abeka Books: Homeschooling Isn't Just for Kids

by Keisha
(USA)

Former Detroit Public School dropout homeschools alongside her two children using ABeka Books! Read her encouraging story...

You may think that I am a little old to homeschool but I am doing it and the second time around is better than the first time. I am actually learning. I attended Detroit Public Schools and learned a little. I was struggling to keep up in school so I quit as soon as I was old enough.

When I was young I couldn't wait to get out of the house and have a little fun. I quit school in the 10th grade against my mother and well-meaning people's advice.

Because I do not have a high school diploma or a GED finding employment is very hard. I desire to get my high school diploma. My mother is now homeschooling me and my 2 children together.

Why do you like this curriculum/course? My mom uses Abeka Books for Science, Health, History and English. She also uses tons of Internet Resources and printouts. I like it because it is fast paced enough that I do not get bored.

How long have you used it? I just started using this curriculum this year.

What grades did you use it for? I am using 10th grade books for all subjects.

What do you like most about it? I like that it is kinda fast paced and I can learn at my own pace.

Is it affordable? Why? It is affordable for me only because my mom doesn't allow anyone to write in books. She has books from Pre-K - 12th and some college books. We have to use paper to do all of our work. She says that the books are to be recycled because purchasing paper is much cheaper than purchasing the books.

If I had to purchase them myself with today's economy I would not be able to afford it.

Do you have any cost-cutting tips, etc. to share when using this curriculum? Use internet resources and recycle books from child to child.

This is not only a great review of ABeka Books, but such an inspiring story, Keisha! Thanks so much for posting it! Wishing you much success and happiness as you finish your high school education at home with your children! Blessings, Heather :)
