Abeka Books: Homeschooling Isn't Just for Kids

by Keisha
(USA)

Former Detroit Public School dropout homeschools alongside her two children using ABeka Books! Read her encouraging story...

You may think that I am a little old to homeschool but I am doing it and the second time around is better than the first time. I am actually learning. I attended Detroit Public Schools and learned a little. I was struggling to keep up in school so I quit as soon as I was old enough.

When I was young I couldn't wait to get out of the house and have a little fun. I quit school in the 10th grade against my mother and well-meaning people's advice.

Because I do not have a high school diploma or a GED finding employment is very hard. I desire to get my high school diploma. My mother is now homeschooling me and my 2 children together.

Why do you like this curriculum/course? My mom uses Abeka Books for Science, Health, History and English. She also uses tons of Internet Resources and printouts. I like it because it is fast paced enough that I do not get bored.

How long have you used it? I just started using this curriculum this year.

What grades did you use it for? I am using 10th grade books for all subjects.

What do you like most about it? I like that it is kinda fast paced and I can learn at my own pace.

Is it affordable? Why? It is affordable for me only because my mom doesn't allow anyone to write in books. She has books from Pre-K - 12th and some college books. We have to use paper to do all of our work. She says that the books are to be recycled because purchasing paper is much cheaper than purchasing the books.

If I had to purchase them myself with today's economy I would not be able to afford it.

Do you have any cost-cutting tips, etc. to share when using this curriculum? Use internet resources and recycle books from child to child.

This is not only a great review of ABeka Books, but such an inspiring story, Keisha! Thanks so much for posting it! Wishing you much success and happiness as you finish your high school education at home with your children! Blessings, Heather :)
