thank you for sharing your story. it is an inspriation to me to continue through the rough patches of homeschooling. You certainly are not failing when you see the strength of your children's character. that will help them stand before the Lord..not school work.
that being said, are there public libraries in Canada? I have seen alot of curriculum-type books at the library including grammar and science experiments, etc. They also have a donation box for free books.
You also may want to contact some christian based and/or public schools in your area. when they update their curriculum, many times they throw away the previous year's books away. My sister has gotten alot of curriculum this way. You may have to really try to find someone who is of a giving spirit. some people just don't want to help, but there are some who are sent from God to help provide your needs.
Keep the faith and remember that your struggles bring strength to you and others.
2Cr 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2Cr 12:10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Failing, by whose standards? by: MsB
If your children have grown in character and faith, you have hardly failed. Those are the 2 top reasons you took them out of public school to begin with. Your family just seems to be getting an extra coat of polish on that faith.
By whose standards are they behind? The workbooks'? The local school districts'? Your relatives'? The only standards to follow are yours and God's. And by the sounds of your persistent efforts to hang in there, you are doing well.
Your situation does sound difficult, but it is through adversity that we shine. Is homeschooling really the real issue here? Or is it mostly the rest of your circumstances? Thank the Lord you are homeschooling at this time! It may be the one thing that holds you together as a family - long after high school graduation, your sense of family will be a treasure, no matter what else comes down the pike.
Meanwhile, do get connected with whatever home school support groups you can - either locally or online. Also, spend as much time in the library as possible - it's full of books, videos and all kinds of information.
Google resources for homeschooling resources for free - there are lots of resources out there!
I am a single homeschooling mother of 3 and the Lord has faithfully seen us through all kinds of adversities. He never fails. Keep your eyes on Him.

Grades of Your Kids by: Heather
Hi Diane,
Thanks so much for sharing your situation. I feel for you! Can you tell me what grades your children are in? Perhaps I can try to help find some generous homeschoolers to donate some curriculum they are finished with.
You might want to contact a support group in your area that co-ordinates a bookfair. At a bookfair in our area, needy families can obtain vouchers for curriculum from exhibiting vendors.
Anyway, let us know what grades your children are in for each subject - I know you said they are behind in some areas.
